To the Parker Jotter, an Ode to a Pen

An Ode to a Pen by Kevin Kim

This shiny object I hold in my hand so tight

Pondering for hours wondering what I should write

For your elegance and beauty strikes me firece

Wondering what boundaries next I should pierce

For this pen is more than a mere tool

But perhaps it appears that way to the next fool

This instrument creates greed, pain and treason

On the contrary, it must be called an instrument for a reason

This pen makes heroes, knights and scholars

Created inventions worth a million dollars

But this pen is a tool, it cannot alone think

But once utilized, it is a revolution in ink!

For this pen I know that creations will be made

But like all things, the success will fade

But once in ink it shall perish!

And perhaps your grandsons and granddaughters will be left to cherish

This pen lies as an extension of my mind

Marriage with canvas, wondering what new ideas I may find

But let this pen not be the mere hero, it’s true

Because in the end, the true hero is you

Without you, many people sick we will lose soon

Without you, man never would have went to the moon

No vaccines, no cure no illnesses to prevent

And the next scientific discovery may not exist an event

No minds to discover new ideas and such

The universe up above may not be able to touch

But the truth is, we have much more we must discover

So ideas will be concrete, and no longer hover

So when you think that you are useless and weak

That you must be heard! Make the effort to speak

And let your name forever ring true

Revolution in ink! The revolutionary is you!

So live every day so you are constantly ascending

And always make sure that your stress is constantly bending

And dream big, remain true and proud

You are important, say your name loud

Because what you did in the past is useless to regret

So the only thing to do now is forgive and forget

And make sure you write things down, with your pen do it now!

Because you never know when you’ll be big (and how)!

But because you can look back one day and say that you made it big

That whatever you worked on then was not a short gig

That your ideas, your hunger were able to be heard

And that no matter what you thought, your mind was not absurd

So this is for you, the writer, who dreams big to write!

This is for all the pain, the tears and the sleepless nights!

Because it is when you start to realize that your dreams are too far

You truly realize how important you are

Let people put you down and let them throw their bricks

Because words cannot hurt you right? Only sticks?

But let them hit you, let them have their notion

But collect those bricks and build a foundation

Because what you think you cannot do, you probably can

The worst is failure, but it makes you a stronger man (woman)

So let them hit you strong! You are getting stronger!

But never let the pain ring long. You are getting stronger!

So always have ideas to change the world and sing

My dear friend, let you lead a revolution in ink

This shiny object I clasp so tightly in hand

You don’t know how much fire you have fanned

For when times get tough and harder to bear

When you feel like your loved ones are not even there

When you think that the future is like it is nowhere in sight

Keep in mind, with your idea, reaching success, you just might

With your pen in hand, write down new thoughts

And maybe one day, you will be the one to untie enigmatic knots

Because one day you will succeed!

Always work hard, its more than a creed

So to this pen I hold so eagerly I cling

You and me both, let’s see what the future will bring…
